ORGANIC STANDARDS, FRESHNESS AND TASTE ARE THE ACES OF OUR GRAINS
Malmgård estate is situated deep within the farming landscapes of Pernaja, by the Koskenkylä river. The farm, established in 1606, has stayed within the same family since 1614. Today it is operated by the 13th Creutz generation – the brothers Henrik and Fredrik.
Malmgård was a dairy farm for a long time, until our family decided to focus on grain production in the 1980s. We switched to organic farming in 1995, and today we also operate a beer brewery and a shop on the premises. We get our electricity from the water power of our own river.
Henrik and his family is in charge of the farming operations together with his parents who still actively help out despite the succession having taken place. Henrik has a MA in Political Science. He ended up being a farmer the natural way: to continue the work that had been passed down through generations. The task is the most pleasant of responsibilities for the landlord, who enjoys the work on the farm.
Malmgård has specialized in growing oats, emmer and spelt. The latter are delicious ancient crops that are wonderfully suited for baking, as well as making rice-like grain and beer. With our organic rice-grain one can easily replace imported rice, for example when making risotto. We also make many other products out of our different types of grain, like pasta, cereal and muesli. The selection of products also includes apple juice from our own apples and rose wine vinegar made from rose petals.
The family’s decision to switch to organic farming was unanimous. We still see organic farming as being the right choice for us, and we have no intention of abandoning it. The surrounding nature also clearly benefits from the organic farming methods: more species of wildlife can be seen on our premises now than when using conventional farming methods.
We are a part of Foodhub because we believe in this model. The world changes, and the way people want to buy their food changes along with it. The customer’s life situation dictates how and where they want to buy their food, as well as how much they want to buy. This is a new, flexible way, in which we strongly believe.
