FAIR AND CLOSE
Airikkala is a farm in the village of Uotila in Nurmijärvi. Our family-owned company has deep roots: we are the 19th generation to cultivate the lands of the farm that was established in 1553.
We – Mona and Ilari Airikkala – brought back the sheep to the farm in 2011 after a long break, because we wanted to counterbalance our work in Helsinki with a more rural life at home. Besides, the Finnish sheep fits in well as part of the peasant culture. The sheep also play an important role in preserving the traditional landscape.
At first, the ewes Paistiina, Rosmariina, Kareniina and Viuliina moved in. The herd grew fast, and today a few hundred sheep and lambs graze the farmlands. In 2015 we signed a contract to switch to organic farming, and since 2017 all our farmland and animals are organically grown. However, the change was hardly noticeable, since our sheep have been brought up close to organic standards the whole time.
Animal welfare and a species-specific life are the basic principles of organic production. We keep the ewes in the same herd all year round. We always aim to arrange the feeding so that the animals can move in and out freely around the clock. The lambing takes place once a year in spring. The lambs have time to grow enough before the grazing season so they can utilize the grass efficiently when the season begins in May. Over the course of the season we circulate the herd from one pasture to another.
We get all our silage from our own fields. During the lambing season we also feed the ewes oats and broad been that come from a local organic farm.
In addition to lamb meat, we also produce sheep hides, wool yarn and asparagus that we started growing in 2017. At the moment we are waiting for the roots of the asparagus to become strong enough for our first harvest to be reaped in 2019.
As a small farm we specialize in direct sales. This enables us to handle the entire supply chain and develop it swiftly and with agility. We joined Local Foodhub because of our interest in all sorts of new sales channels.
